You will learn about the six types of unconscious bias that underly the mental shortcuts and assumptions which lead to inequitable hiring outcomes: confirmation bias, availability bias, affinity bias, implicit stereotyping, the halo effect, and the horn effect. These biases fundamentally disadvantage candidates from historically marginalized groups, while advantaging privileged candidates that will keep your workforce and culture homogenous. You'll come away with greater awareness of how to catch yourself engaging in these biases and how to reduce their impact in both yourself and others involved in the hiring process.

Speaker: Isis Fabian

Isis Fabian is a dedicated advocate for diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplaces, with nearly a decade of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) experience including 7 years of primary research on the US professional workforce and several global markets (Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the UK, Germany, Poland, India, Hong Kong, and Japan). Fabian has conducted nationally representative mixed methodology research on a broad range of talent cohorts and concepts to develop deep understanding of diverse, intersectional workplace experiences. Fabian's areas of expertise include intersectionality, equity, belonging, microaggressions, unconscious bias, White dominant culture, engaging White men in DEI, women’s advancement, sponsorship, sexual misconduct, and generational diversity. Fabian has also spent over a year each with professionals in the following talent cohorts, interpreting quantitative data and understanding the common themes in their workplace experiences: professionals with disabilities, Black professionals, Latine professionals, LGBTQIA+ professionals, Millennials, women in STEM, and veterans. This foundation of intersectional understanding across identity groups and industries, along with Fabian's own experience being agender and neurodivergent, guides how they envision cultures that are fair and inclusive to all. Fabian is currently working to actualize this vision in the technology sector as a DEI leader at Carta, a financial technology company.
